Fulton County Government

What an amazing time at the Fulton County Government today! We met up with another amazing group of people today that worked at the Fulton County Government in Communications and 911 calls. They go by the names of Ms.Katrina, Ms.Ethel, and Ms.Claudia. When we first arrived at the government office we went straight to a conference meeting, where we were being honored by most of the Fulton County Government on live tv! We were so honored. After receiving our award from the government we went straight into the studios where the crew behind the camera showed us how it worked while filming a live government conference on national television. After visiting the studios we went directly into the 911 emergency services sector of the government and visited the room where government employees take live 911 calls. I know that this may be insane but it was amazing being able to witness those situations right there before my eyes. That took us about 50 minutes. After visiting that branch of the Fulton County Government we went directly into a conference room and ate lunch while speaking with three amazing people. The first two young ladies that we spoke to go by the names of Ms.Tara and Corporal Byrd. They had informed us on how important it was to get a good education because without an education you won't get very far in life. After meeting up with Corporal Byrd and Ms.Tara, we  met up with another young lady named Ms.Jessica. Ms.Jessica informed us about the different jobs in the Fulton County Government and she even gave us advice about what to do while on job interviews, the correct dress code while in a work place, and most importantly the attitude that you should have while in a workplace. Thank you so much Fulton County Government! The information/advice that you all gave us was truly intriguing.

Today at Fulton County Government

Today at Fulton County Government we were warmly welcomed with a proclamation from the government committee. We met with government workers who showed us around the building and told use about their life. One worked with social media and the other worked with the committee of operations. Next we went on the emergency side where the 9-1-1 calls come in they had us listen to the calls and they told us what the codes mean and what each screen is for. The lady that I was with told me about her life. After that we went to have lunch with corporate Byrd and talked a little with her about how she got started. Also we talked to Ms. Jessica about how to look at certain jobs and be respectful when at a job interview and don’t ever be late to a job interview. But over all I had an amazing time there.

The Fulton County Government Experience

Today we went to the Fulton County Government and we sat in a government board meeting. It was pretty interesting because I never sat in a government meeting. Also, we were a part of that meeting. They actually honored Youth Trek and it was our appreciation day. We received a proclamation declaring our appreciation day. After we went in to the television broadcast room where they sent all of the footage that is going on in the meeting to live TV. Their TV stations name was FGTV. Then, we went in to the 911-service room where they take 911 calls. I was able to hear a few of the calls. A few of them were funny and some were pretty serious. I learned that the busiest times is the summer time because of the kids being out of school. Also, the service callers sit in their seats for 8 hours or more. They have a total of 12 service callers. The service caller I sat with was a man that had been working there for 5 years. He gave me a wonderful piece of advice, which was to stay aware of my surroundings. After I sat with him we sat with two women who both worked for Fulton County. They told us to push forward with what we want to do and you can change your major as much as you want. After we met with Ms.Jessica. She gave us hands out about what jobs want to see and what to wear to a business interview. She also told us to come early so the boss will know you are serious about this job. Also, ask as many questions because you want the boss to know you are really interested about your job. A lot of advice was given and I actually took note of key things the people we have met over the trip have given us. If you are a floor sweeper be the best floor sweeper. Don’t let anyone steal your shine. Thank you to Ms. Claudia and Ms.Ethel for showing us around.

Youth Trek Appreciation Day

Today, at Fulton County government we had an extremely full day filled with information and excitement. We started off going to a Board of Commissioners meeting. In the meeting were the different people of Fulton County who needed or had a request for the government. It was interesting to see a piece of Atlanta that reminded me a lot of DC. Also, in the meeting Youth Trek was honored with a proclamation declaring August 7 "Youth Trek Appreciation day." HOW AMAZING IS THAT?! We have our own "holiday." I was so honored and grateful that the people of Fulton County reserved that day just for us. Next, we went to the Fulton Government  television broadcasting room. It was like a mini news station. It was so interesting especially for me because broadcast journalism is definitely something I am interested in. Then, we went to the 911 emergency center where we were able to sit next to call takers and  listen in on different 911 calls. We saw how busy the call takers stay and learned that it is a hard job that is not for everyone but the people enjoy it. I've never had to call 911 but I learned so much about what goes on and for me that was very intriguing. We then moved on to a meeting with Ms. Tara and Corporal Byrd. They were two women of color who were very welcoming and inspiring. They shared their career journey with us and also different pieces of advice to each of us specifically. I really enjoyed meeting with them and I was so so thankful that they spent that time with us. We ate lunch, chatted and was then welcomed by Ms. Jessica from the communications department of the Fulton County government. She shared plentiful advice with us all about the different career opportunities in government. She also taught us about behaviors in the professional world and provided us with a handout that we can always refer back to. I learned so much and her advice was something I am definitely going to need as the days go by.

I had a lot of fun at Fulton county with our amazing tour guides Ms. Ethel and Ms. Claudia. They both were extremely sweet, caring and welcoming. I hope to meet and keep in touch with all of them soon. If you are reading...thank you so much! I honestly could not thank any of the ladies enough for today. - tierra

Coca-Cola

Today at coca-cola we met with Ms.Lori, Ms. Angela, and Ms.Talley. We talked about how they got connected to coca-cola. Ms. Lori got connected by her mentor. Ms. Angela got connected her being a coca cola scholar. We also talked about what they had to leave behind when getting a job at coca-cola. Ms.Talley left all her friends and family. We also met with Mr. Jamal who showed us old thing that they have collected. Like when the came out with the first coupon and created the first image of Santa Clause. We had a lot of fun at coca-cola.
            -Kayla W

When I say Coca, you say Cola!

Whoa. Where to begin with Coke? I met some of the most influential people I will ever meet at Coke today. Ms. Angela, Ms. Billingsley and Ms. Talley were so very welcoming and full of energy and excitement. I have never seen such smart, enthusiastic and bright people as the ladies at Coke today. We started off by giving introductions and from there we were like old time friends. We had great conversation and I learned so much...we even got amazing gifts! Things were said in that meeting that I will never forget. When I get advice especially from such influential people I stick with it and live by it and I took mental notes that I will never forget. Connections were made, possible mentors were created and I know I will work hard to make these ladies happy! Whenever I come to Atlanta again, I have to follow up with them and we definitely will stay connected through e-mail. Mr. Jamal who was in charge of the Archives was so much fun! He showed us everything from old toys from the early 1900s to new things people have not seen yet. He was so enthusiastic and always had a smile on his face. We learned so much about Coke that we never knew. I hope to meet with him again as well. Thanks Coke!

Day 3

After we went to Coca Cola Headquarters. There we met three women who all worked at Coca Cola. They sat down with us giving good information about what they actually do and how they got there. They taught me I have to maintain good grades and get as many scholarships as much as possible. I think that advice will help me in the long run because college is expensive and with my major I have to be in college for 5 -7 years. Also, I learned I have to sacrifice somethings to be successful. As we walked around the building everything was Coke. They had Coke chairs ,Coke bottles and Coke machines everywhere. I found the machines most interesting because you didn't have to pay for the sodas and drinks because you where in the headquarters. After we spoke with the three wonderful ladies we were able to see the Coca-Cola Archives. The archives has every product of cola that was made. I think it was pretty cool because they had things from 1920 which is pretty old. I really enjoyed the tour of the archives.- The Next Pharmacist (Kaylah)

Coca-Cola headquarters

Coca! Coca! Coca! Cola! What a thrilling day for us at the Coca-Cola headquarters today. We got some great advice, a recap of Coca-Cola's history, and some great Coca-cola! Today we had met up with four amazing people. Ms.Angela, Ms.Lori, Ms.Talley, and Mr.jamaal. All such great people. When we first came into the headquarters we were escorted to a  conference room. When walked into that conference room we saw three young
ladies who stood before who greeted us with a very warmwelcome. They were so generous and they yearned to learn more about us as people. We had told them about our future plans in life and what we were doing currently while in high school or middle school. After we confirmed to them things about us, they told us things about them and what they had to do back in college in order to get where they are now. After the conference with the three young ladies we received bags that were made out of recycled plastic with a Coca-cola shirt on the inside. After visiting with the three young ladies we had visited with a young guy named Mr. Jamaal who worked in the archives department in Coca-Cola. He showed us the different things that Coca-Cola had kept since the company was created. Things like cups, commercial tapings, artwork, toys, jingles for Coca-Cola, and so much more. Thank you so much Mr.Jamaal, Ms.Angela,Ms.Talley, and Ms.Lori for letting us spend a few hours of your day with us.

Day 3

Today was another great day. We visited the UPS headquarters. I learned that ups meant united parcel service. I really enjoyed the lunch we had with Ms.Janice and Ms.Catara. Ms.Janice has been working for UPS for 25 years and Ms.Catara has been with UPS for 3 years. After lunch we went into a conference room to learn more about UPS. UPS has 8.8 million costumers daily. Also they do not put their names on anything like stadiums. They don't really believe in competition. UPS likes helping with the community and other foundations that get the community involved. Organizations such as CARE, The Boys and Girls Club , and so many other organizations. Did you know UPS drivers have gone for 30 years without any accidents? Well I actually learned that today. It was quite fascinating because 30
years is a pretty long time.

Be the brand…

Today we had a blast at UPS! The headquarters are surrounded by beautiful greenery and trails. We first walked in and were greeted so nicely and there were nothing but smiling faces all around. We met with Ms. Janice and Ms. Katara and their big, pearly smiles and by then I already knew that we were bound to have a great time. We started off in their gigantic cafeteria and grabbed lunch and had a little chat packed with great advice. After that, we were in a more intimate setting and we got even more helpful words of wisdom from Ms. Janice and her colleagues. The main take away was “Whatever you are going to do, be the best you can be at it. Also, Ms. Janice and Ms. Katara helped me realize that life is a journey and you will never know where you will end up. We got very special gifts that I will cherish forever and very wise words that I will stand by for as long as I live. I hope to meet with them all again when I come to Atlanta and I hope to keep in touch by e-mail.
They were amazing and beautiful people inside and out. - tierra

Today at UPS

Today at UPS we had a wonderful time. We met with Ms. Janice AND Ms. Kentara. We had lunch. At lunch I had a chick-fil-a chicken sandwich and a salad. We talked about the number of transportation vehicles they had. They had 99,000 trucks, and about 500 airplanes. They have over 8.8 million customers a day. UPS was founded in 1907 by a teenager who wanted to help his and other families get thing all round the world so he came up with UPS which stand for United Parcel Services. They have shipped lots of things the biggest thing they have ever ship was a whale because they had to get a big cage and keep the whale in water so it can survive. We also met Mr. Frank who worked there for 39 years so he told us about how he got started in the company. He got started because he was working for this packaging company and he was the only one working to his best ability so UPS wanted him to work for them so he got hired and been working there every since that day. But one word of advice was to “ALWAYS DO YOUR JOB TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY”.

UPS Headquarters

What an amazing time at the UPS headquarters today in hot Atlanta, Georgia. Today we met up with two very inspirational young ladies. Their names were Janice and Quatara. Both very amazing women who were very welcoming to us as soon as we stepped through those doors. When we first got into the headquarters of UPS we went straight to lunch, where we all got  a Chick-fill-A sandwich that was delicious and a healthy salad to go with it. While eating lunch we had discussed things about our futures and future careers. Ms. Janice had told us, if it's janitor, waiter, or even part-time teacher, do your best at it. You never know who's watching so you need to be on point and enjoy what you do regardless of what it is. After lunch we headed upstairs into the conference room. In the conference room we talked about various things about UPS itself. Such as how many customers they get each day, how many delivery trucks that the company has worldwide, how many planes that UPS owns, etc. By going to UPS today I can answer all three of those questions. UPS gets approximately 8.8 million customers a day! That sure is alot! Did you know that UPS has about 99,000 trucks and about 500 planes that they use to deliver things worldwide.  We also learned that UPS not only focuses in their investments but most importantly different communities. UPS is always giving back to the community by picking crops, cleaning facilities, etc. They're always doing something that is helpful to not only them but with others as well. After the conference with both Ms.Janice and Ms. Quatara we had received bracelets from a country in Africa from Ms. Janice. Thank you so much again Ms.Janice I really appreciate it. We had also received a UPS bag that contained a shirt, a water bottle, a small notebook, and a book based on the history of UPS which stands for United Parcel Service. Thank you so much again Ms.Janice and Ms. Quatara for the advice and making us just feel welcome.

2ND DAY IN ALANTA

Yesterday was wonderful we went to the world of coca cola, the MLK center, and the care center. At CARE they told us about their career and what they do at their job. In care they help girls and women who live in poverty. They are global they are partners with coca cola. We talked with the CEO and founder of care about the jobs she worked at and how did she get the name CARE. She got the name care because she was working with all these health facilities so she wanted to use a name that as different that no one has thought of so she came up with care because she cared for the people who were poor and wanted to help them. At the world of coca cola we tasted all the different types of soda in every continent. Yesterday was a very fun day, but at the MLK center we saw where Martin Luther king and Coretta Scott king are buried. We talked with this very nice lady about events that’s happening all around the world to remember MARTIN LUTHUR KING JR. But over all the MLK center was my favorite because the people was nice and I got to learn new things about Mr. King and Mrs. King.
-Kayla

Day 2

Good morning yesterday was fun.First, we went to Care non-profit organization. We met with a woman named Ms.Joyce.She told us what Care's main focus was. They focus on girls in different countries to get them to go to school. In those countries the girls there have to face everyday obstacles. Things like walking for miles to get cleaning water, helping their mother prepare breakfast, getting her mom ready to go out to the field, and getting herself to school. Its a lot that they have to do. I couldn't even imagine myself doing half of what she does. Sometimes the girls don't go to school because they do so much in the
morning. Care is trying to motivate them to go to school. Care is thinking about reaching out to the community. I learned that in Kenya some girls get married at the age of 13.Also,only 1% of the people that your in high school with make it to college. Then, when your in college they pick what classes you take as well as your major. We met with Dr.Gayle who is the CEO and founder of Care. She told me that she changed her career maybe five or six times like me.That shows I can change my career as many times as i would like.

After, we went to the MLK Center. It was a beautiful set up. It had the reflection pool in the middle of the center. Also, it had Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King's caskets are in the middle of the pool.I learned that Martin Luther King was stabbed by a allegedly mentally ill woman. I thought that was so fascinating because it was something I didn't know. We met with a woman that worked at the MLK Center. She said they are getting ready for the 50 year anniversary of the March On Washington. In Atlanta, they are having a community festival to celebrate the march a few days before the March on Washington. I am going to the March on Washington.

Lastly, we went on the Coca Cola Tour. We took a picture with the 7 foot polar bear. He tried to bite my head off. Also, we tasted 60 different sodas from around the world. Some were good and some were just awful. When we were leaving we got to take a coke with a baggie.I like how we could just take in and it would keep moving. Also, we sat on the couch from American Idol 2005. It was pretty cool to sit on the same sofa as some of the American Idol stars. -The Next Pharmacist (Kaylah)

Care for Dr. King with a sip of Coke.

It took me forever to come up with that title! Lol, but I really wanted to incorporate every place we went into it. Unfortunately, we don’t have that much time to blog because we have a busy day ahead of us so I am going to keep this short and sweet. I am going to explain to you all how each of the three C’s relate to each place we went. The C’s are community, career and culture so keep that in mind as you are reading. We started the day off with going to Care. The people of Care really live up to their name and they do so much for young girls and even boys around the world that aren’t as privileged as we are. Out of the three C’s, Care relates more to community. While Care is global, each branch focuses on a different community around the world. I also think that careers is another “C” that can go with Care. All of the people there went through different career paths to finally get to where they are and we learned a lot about that. Next, was the MLK center. Here, we definitely focused on culture and community. The people of Atlanta have their own culture and they really come together as a community to celebrate Dr. King and it is something they love and take very seriously. I learned so much about Dr. King and I thought I knew everything about him! It was really interesting and I loved it. Now, on to The World of Coke. Fun, fun, fun! We loved every single second of coke! From trying the 60 different Coke products from around the world to entering into the real vault with the Coke secret formula. This definitely fits in with the community because Coke started right here in Atlanta. Coke is very important and significant to the people of Atlanta. It was so much fun! I loved it! Now, we have to go start our day. I wish I could write more! Bye guys! - tierra

Second day in Atlanta

Wow, what an amazing second day in Atlanta! I can’t believe that so many amazing and inspiring places are down here in the hot south as well as the people. They sure do have some southern hospitality. Yesterday we had visited three different locations. We had visited an organization called CARE, the MLK center, and the coca-cola museum.

CARE was a truly heart touching experience for all of us. When we had got in we had spoken with a young lady named Ms. Joyce. She was born and raised in Kenya and then she came into the United States when she was attending college. She had joined care a couple of years later after she graduated college because she wanted to make a difference in the world based on where she came from. She spoke to us about how her living conditions were back in Africa. It was harsh! The government chose basically everything for the people. Their education, who they married, and so on. She was a hardworking child growing up because she knew that she wanted to be successful in life. After meeting with Ms. Joyce, we had met with the CEO and President of care Dr. Helene Gayle. Dr. Helene gave us great advice about what we should if we want to be successful and not just have an average life but an over the top one.

After visiting CARE, we had visited the MLK center. The MLK center is exactly right down the street from where Dr. Martin Luther King lived himself and right around the corner from the church where he and his father preached at every Sunday. The MLK center was one of my favorite parts of the day because we had actually learned a little more about MLK than what we actually knew. I always enjoy learning about my history because it shows how these activists back in the days such as Rosa Parks, MLK, Sojourner Truth, and many more paved a way for us African Americans to be free and do what we want to do instead of being forced to do things by horrible people. I even enjoyed the waterfalls right outside of the center. It was beautiful and Dr. Martin Luther King jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King lie right in front of the beautiful MLK center. Literally their tomb stones are placed in the waterfalls. What an amazing time we had.

Lastly but most definitely not the least we had visited the Coco-Cola museum that is right next to the Georgia Aquarium. That museum is out of this world. It was so creative. We went into vaults, we saw different fun and exciting clippings of different commercials of Coca- Cola, and we even tasted 60 different sodas from at least 8 different countries! We were not thirsty any more after drinking all that great soda! The second day of Atlanta really related to the three C’s of Youth Trek. Which are culture, community, and career. What a great second day in Atlanta! I can’t wait to see what is in store for us tomorrow.

Love, Camra

A whirlwind of fun and learning--keep up!

It has been an incredible trip so far in Atlanta. I'm getting to know four great girls while we meet with insipiring individuals who do amazing work to change the world. Yesterday was a wonderful day exploring the aquarium and being welcomed by the Hammond family. Today we had the opportunity to visit CARE and have an engaging discussion about careers, life, opportunities, and challenges. The girls definitely became aware of all the opportunites they have at hand here in the U.S. We also visited the MLK Center and became inspired by the life of a great leader. We capped off the day by visiting the World of Coke and I somehow managed to keep up with the girls tasting about 60 flavors of coke...you can keep up too by following Youth Trek on instagram. You'll see all the action, all in real time! Just go: http://instagram.com/youthtrek or follow us on the instagram app: youthtrek.

THE WONDERFUL WELCOME

Good morning ! Yesterday was wonderful we had a great welcome in to ATL. We went to see the dolphins tails and Nemo and his friends. Also we saw where they shot the movie daddy's little girls. Then we went to the CNN studio and saw the live recording of the news. We saw the largest self standing escalator. We went to Ms. Jessica's friend house to have a welcoming cookout. We had lots of fun we played many games and had great food. But today we will be going to the care center and Coca Cola world. I will be looking forward to try a new flavor in Coca Cola world. Personally over all i think the cookout was the best because we got to meet new people and new friends. Looking forward to blogging again. BYEEEEEEEE.

Pretty Cool

Good morning! Yesterday was a wonderful welcoming day. The plane ride seemed short because I was sleep and listening to music for the two hours. I didn't really like when my ears popped it hurt really but I chewed some gum and it felt better. After we got off the plane it took a while to get to baggage claim but we got there. As soon as we left the hotel we were on the run! First, we went to the Georgia Aquarium to see the dolphin show. It was pretty cool. We sat it the front which was the splash zone and we didn't get splashed not once. Bummer! Then we went through different parts of the aquarium. I learned that sharks do not sleep like humans. They have to swim a round to stay breathing. I really enjoyed when we dissected the frog. After we left the aquarium we went to lunch. We ate at the HardRock Cafe. It had so much. The waiters and waitresses danced and sang. It was like they were having fun at work. I wouldn't mind working there.

Next, we went to CNN headquarters. We took a tour of the building. The headquarters had the worlds biggest free standing floor escalator. Free standing means it is connected to only two floors. It was a great tour. I learned that they take different footage and put it together to create a story. The things you see on CNN now was taken a few hours before it was broadcasted but some of it is actual live footage.

Later that afternoon, we went to a great cookout. It felt like it was home away from home. We met with Ms. Debra. She has been working with Delta airlines for 13 years. We ate some really good food. She gave some good advice. She told me if I fall get back up dust your self off and try again. Also, she said I shouldn't be worrying about anything else but my grades. With good grades you receive scholarships. I really enjoyed when we played Taboo. Even though my team lost we still had a good time. -The Next Pharmacist (Kaylah)

How to begin?

Where. To. Begin? I’m sorry guys. I know I start off every blog like this but I mean, how could you not? Each day is jam-packed with amazing activities that stimulate your brain, feed your “funmeter” and leave you wanting more. Okay, lets get focused on the topic at hand: Youth Trek in Atlanta. I love the city of Atlanta! Amazing, beautiful, quirky and incredibly sweet is how I would describe Atlanta and we have only been here for a day! Cool right? I just think it is amazing how one could learn so much about one place in the course of 24 hours! Lets start off with the biggest aquarium in the world; The Georgia Aquarium. I was so excited to go there first because I just thought it was a cool way to start. Almost all the girls were familiar with this aquarium because a scene of Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls was filmed there. Going in is where I first experienced that quirky Atlanta humor. There were 5 bag check lines and I was in a really long line so I decided to switch to a shorter line. The guy who was checking bags yelled for me to, “Get back over here to my line! What is wrong with you all switching lines and whatnot?” I was a little scared and wondering why this man was so mean. Turns out, he was just joking and that was his personality. Crazy right? I know. Then, we proceeded to go to the dolphin show which was absolutely amazing and much better than the National Aquarium's show if I may add. We also checked out many cool exhibits and I learned a lot. Next, we went to CNN (my future home). We did a tour of the incredible, incredible building which was as big as Pentagon City! I really felt I was a new employee there and they were showing me around for the first time. I loved every second of the tour. We learned so much from their history to the different branches to the upcoming technology competition does not know about yet. It was incredibly cool and I hope to find myself there one day not just to be there but to work there. Next we caught the subway here in Atlanta called the Marta. We rode for about 6 stops until we got to the famous neighborhood “College Park” to meet Ms. Denelle. She was sweet enough to pick us up along with her sister Ms. Daphnie and they gave us a warm welcome. Ms. Denelle’s mom was so excited to welcome the Youth Trek crew to Atlanta that she had family over her house to welcome us. We came in the house and the first thing to hit our noses was the sweet smell of barbecue. She had enough food for two family reunions! To know that she cooked all that food for us was an amazing feeling. I felt like I was being reunited with a long lost family member. Ms.Debra was so sweet and full of energy and she treated us as if we were her grandkids. She was not afraid to tell us like it is and give us the advice she wanted us  o have. I took everything she said to heart and I will never forget her. We had such a good time. We did everything from playing taboo to learning about different card games. The bottom line is I felt so at home and I loved every minute of being there. I want to thank Ms. Denelle and her family so much. I really appreciated it. I cannot wait for today...stay tuned!! - Tierra
